How ChatGPT decides who to cite, and why publishers win

900 million weekly users, a median cited-page Domain Rating of 90, and only 8–10% overlap with Google's top 10. ChatGPT is a publisher game.

THE SHORT ANSWER

ChatGPT is the biggest AI assistant, with 900 million weekly users per OpenAI, and it sends about 87% of AI referral traffic. It cites publishers, Wikipedia, Reddit and major media far more than brand sites; the median Domain Rating of its most-cited pages is 90, and only 8–10% of its citations overlap with Google's top 10. Visibility in ChatGPT is earned on other people's sites.

Why ChatGPT matters most

Scale and intent. OpenAI reports 900 million weekly users and ChatGPT handles roughly 12% of Google's search volume according to Ahrefs. Conductor found it sends the large majority of AI referral traffic, and Ahrefs saw AI visitors convert at about 23 times its organic rate.

Which sources ChatGPT cites

Publishers and media. Ahrefs' study of ChatGPT's most-cited pages found a median Domain Rating of 90, with Reddit, Wikipedia, Amazon, Forbes, Business Insider and Wired among the top domains. Part of this is licensing: OpenAI has content deals with several outlets.

Ahrefs also found 67% of ChatGPT's top 1,000 citations are "off-limits to marketers": pages you cannot buy or place on. The remaining third, including Reddit, review sites and niche publications, is where the work happens.

How ChatGPT searches

Two sources: training data (refreshed roughly every six months) and a live web search when the question needs it. The live search fans one prompt out into many sub-queries, so pages that rank for specific niche questions can be pulled in even when the brand page is not.

ChatGPT's crawler cannot execute JavaScript, so client-rendered content disappears for it. OpenAI documents three bots: GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for its search index, and ChatGPT-User for live fetches during a chat. Ahrefs found 5.9% of 140 million sites block GPTBot, often by accident.

What to do for ChatGPT

Earn mentions on the publishers and communities it already cites, make your own facts easy to quote, and let its crawlers in.

  1. Allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. Check robots.txt. Server-render all important content.
  2. Target the citable third. Reddit, review sites, niche publications and "best of" lists in your category. Ahrefs found 43.8% of cited pages are listicles.
  3. Give authors something real. Original data, an expert quote, a case study. Not a link request.
  4. Publish official facts. An FAQ with prices, locations, people and dates ChatGPT can repeat correctly.
  5. Refresh. 76% of ChatGPT's most-cited pages had been updated within 30 days (Ahrefs).

How to measure

ChatGPT passes referrer data for its source links but not for some in-answer links, so GA4 undercounts. Add a monthly prompt list, log crawler hits for ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot, and ask customers how they found you.

Expect volatility: Ahrefs' Patrick Stox describes AI outputs as probabilities on top of probabilities. Ask the same question five times and you might be cited three. Track the rate, not a single answer.

Three tiers of mentions, in order of weight

Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions had a 0.664 correlation with AI visibility, higher than backlinks or Domain Rating, and mentions on heavily linked pages a 0.7 correlation. Editorial mentions come first, then community mentions, then your own channels.

Tier one is editorial: publications, industry media and review sites with real authority. Tier two is community: Reddit threads, Quora answers, forums. Tier three is owned: your YouTube channel, podcast and LinkedIn, all indexed and citable. Most brands over-invest in tier three because it is easy, and under-invest in tier one because it takes a pitch.

What to pitch, and to whom

Run your ten most important buyer questions in ChatGPT with web search on and list every cited domain. Group them: already mention you, mention competitors but not you, generic with no brands. The middle group is your target list; rank it by how often each source is cited and how recently it was updated.

Pitch with substance. A data point the author cannot get elsewhere, a clear expert explanation of a tricky topic, or a customer story with numbers will get you added to an existing article far more often than a link request. Offer to help update the piece, because fresher articles are cited more.

Revisit monthly. Ahrefs found roughly 45% of AI Overview citations change on refresh; ChatGPT's pool moves too. A rolling list keeps effort pointed at what the model is reading now.

ChatGPT for Australian brands

ChatGPT's publisher bias means Australian brands are often absent from answers to local questions simply because the cited sources are US or global publications. The opening is to be in the Australian and local sources that ChatGPT does cite: industry bodies, local business media, review platforms and community threads about your city.

Check which of those appear for your questions, then earn a place on them. For a Melbourne services brand, two local publication mentions and a properly answered Reddit thread can move a brand from absent to named within a quarter, in my experience, because there is less competition for those slots than for a Forbes mention.

Keep your own facts consistent across every one of those sources. Consensus is what the model rewards; the same description of your business in five places is worth more than five different ones.

How to read ChatGPT referral data

ChatGPT sends the most AI traffic by far, but it also strips referrers in some cases, so GA4 undercounts it. Treat a rise in direct visits to deep pages after a ChatGPT mention as a clue, and lean on the form question to capture influence that never shows up as a session.

Conductor's 2026 benchmark put AI referrals at about 1.08% of all web traffic with ChatGPT responsible for roughly 87% of it, and Goodie's B2B panel showed ChatGPT's share of measurable AI referrals falling from 89% to 62.6% in eight months as Claude and Gemini grew. Both can be true: ChatGPT is still the biggest, and the mix is changing fast enough that each platform deserves its own line.

A note on ChatGPT Shopping and product brands

For product brands, ChatGPT increasingly shows product cards drawn from merchant feeds and retailer pages. Amazon is among its most-cited domains. If you sell physical products, make sure your product data (names, prices, availability, specifications) is clean on your own site and consistent across the retailers that carry you.

The same consensus rule applies: a product described the same way on your site, on Amazon or your retailers, and in reviews is easier for the model to recommend confidently than one with conflicting details. Keep names and specifications identical everywhere.

Common mistakes with ChatGPT visibility

Blocking GPTBot by accident, relying on JavaScript to render key facts, chasing high-authority publishers you cannot realistically reach, and judging success from a single answer.

  1. Blocked crawlers Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User before anything else.
  2. Client-rendered content ChatGPT's crawler does not execute JavaScript. Load the page with JS off and check what is left.
  3. Wrong targets Two-thirds of top citations are off-limits; spend time on the third you can earn.
  4. One-shot judgement Track the citation rate across a fixed prompt list, monthly.

The short version

ChatGPT trusts publishers. Be in them, keep your own facts clean and crawlable, and measure the trend.
