AI Mode is Google's full conversational search. Its answers are 86% semantically similar to AI Overviews, yet only 13.7% of citations overlap. AI Mode's top cited domain is YouTube by a wide margin, followed by Google and Wikipedia, and it cites Quora 3.5 times more than AI Overviews, plus more Facebook and Instagram. Video and community presence matter more here than anywhere else in Google.
AI Mode versus AI Overviews
They say similar things from different sources. Ahrefs studied 730,000 responses and found 86% semantic similarity but only 16% word similarity and 13.7% citation overlap. Winning one does not mean winning the other.
Which sources AI Mode cites
YouTube leads by a wide margin, then Google properties and Wikipedia. AI Mode cites Quora 3.5 times more often than AI Overviews and pulls much more from Facebook and Instagram. Ahrefs puts it plainly: each Google surface has its own index, biases and preferences.
AI Mode also casts a wider net: Profound measured about 15.2 sources per answer, against 6.6 for the Gemini app. More slots means more room for expert and community sources, which is good news for smaller brands that are active where their customers talk.
| Source type | AI Mode | AI Overviews |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Top domain by a wide margin | ~5.6% of citations |
| Quora | 3.5× more than AIO | Lower |
| Facebook / Instagram | Much heavier | Lighter |
| Sources per answer | ~15.2 (Profound) | Fewer |
What this means for your plan
If your customers use AI Mode, video and community presence move from nice-to-have to core. A clear YouTube video answering a buyer question, and genuine answers on Quora and Reddit, are citable assets.
- Publish answer videos. Short, specific, with a transcript and chapters. YouTube is AI Mode's top source.
- Be in the conversation. Quora and Reddit answers from a named expert, with disclosure.
- Keep the web page too. Google surfaces still ground in Search; the page and the video reinforce each other.
- Track separately. Run your prompt list in AI Mode and in normal Search; the cited domains will differ.
Where AI Mode sits for Australian users
AI Mode is live in Australia and sits one tap from the normal results, so the same person may use classic Search for a quick fact and AI Mode for a comparison. Plan for both: local SEO and Google Business Profile for the quick, local intent; video, community and specific comparison pages for the conversational, research intent.
A useful habit is to run each of your buyer questions in both modes once a month and compare the cited domains side by side. The gap between the two lists is your AI Mode to-do list.
A quick AI Mode audit you can do today
Open AI Mode, ask your ten buyer questions, and note three things per answer: whether you are named, which domains are cited, and whether any are YouTube, Quora or social. The pattern tells you where to put the next month of effort.
- Named, not cited Good: the model knows you. Add a citable page or video so it can link you.
- Competitors named, you absent Find the cited sources and earn a place on them.
- Mostly YouTube cited Make the video. Your page alone is unlikely to break in.
- Mostly community cited A named expert answering properly in those threads.
What AI Mode means for different kinds of business
For a product or service brand, the goal is to be one of the names in the answer to category questions ("best", "near me", "for small business"), so buyers either click through or search for you by name. For a publisher or expert, repeated citation builds authority in the model over time.
Ahrefs describes three states of AI visibility: cited with a link, mentioned without a link, and not visible. AI Mode links about 37% of the time, so "mentioned without a link" is common; it sends no visit you can see but still shapes the decision. The form question ("How did you hear about me?") is the only reliable way to catch it.
A sensible first quarter: ten buyer questions, run monthly in AI Mode; one answer video per month on the questions where YouTube is already cited; two community answers per month from a named expert; and the page refresh routine underneath. Judge after a quarter, not a month.
How to measure
AI Mode passes referrer data for about 37% of mentions according to Ahrefs, the second-highest after Perplexity, so a GA4 AI channel will catch some of it. Pair it with a monthly prompt check and the form question.
Because AI Mode and AI Overviews cite differently, report them as two lines. A brand can be strong in one and absent from the other, and the fix is different for each.
How AI Mode builds an answer
AI Mode is Google's full conversational search: it fans a question out into many sub-searches, reads the results and writes one answer with citations. Ahrefs describes this one-to-many model as the current stage of search; over 95% of fan-out queries have zero search volume because no human would type them.
That has a direct consequence for planning. You cannot "rank for" a fan-out query, but you can be the best answer to the underlying sub-question. If your page on "cost of SEO services in Melbourne" is specific and current, it can be pulled into an AI Mode answer about choosing an SEO agency even though the user never typed your keyword.
Because AI Mode pulls around 15 sources per answer, it is also the Google surface most likely to include smaller, expert sites. Breadth of coverage across a topic matters more here than a single dominant page.
Video first: what a citable YouTube video looks like
YouTube is AI Mode's top cited domain by a wide margin, so a short, specific video answering one buyer question is one of the most direct assets you can create. Title it as the question, open with the answer, and upload a clean transcript with chapters.
Ahrefs' research found YouTube mentions correlate with AI visibility across ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode, not only in AI Mode. One well-made video per important question is a reasonable monthly target for most small teams; a camera and a clear script are enough.
Keep the web page too. Google surfaces still ground in Search, and a page plus a video on the same question reinforce each other: the page can embed the video, the video description can link the page.
| Element | Why it matters for AI Mode |
|---|---|
| Question-style title | Matches fan-out sub-queries |
| Answer in the first 20 seconds | The part most likely to be quoted |
| Transcript and chapters | Retrievable text; Google indexes captions |
| Description with facts and a link | Gives the model specifics to repeat |
Communities: Quora and Reddit done properly
AI Mode cites Quora 3.5 times more than AI Overviews and leans on social platforms. The rule for communities is the same everywhere: answer real questions thoroughly, disclose who you are, never paste marketing copy. Models learn from the whole thread, including the replies.
The short version
Same Google, different sources. For AI Mode, think video and communities first, then the page.
