THE SHORT ANSWER

Perplexity runs a live web search for every answer and is the most aligned with traditional Google results: Ahrefs found 28.6% of its citations rank in Google's top 10, against 8–10% for ChatGPT. It also links most generously, with about 52% of mentions carrying a link. If you already rank well, Perplexity is usually the first AI platform where you will see results.

How Perplexity differs

It is a search engine first. Every answer starts with a live web search, and the cited pages track Google rankings more closely than any other assistant. Ahrefs: 28.6% of Perplexity citations are in Google's top 10, compared with 8–10% for ChatGPT.

It links more than anyone

About 51.6% of Perplexity mentions include a link, versus 36.8% for AI Mode, 26.9% for ChatGPT and 10.7% for AI Overviews. That makes Perplexity the platform most likely to turn a citation into a measurable visit.

What Perplexity rewards

Ranking, freshness and clarity. Because it searches live, recently updated pages that rank for the specific sub-questions in a prompt are cited most. Ahrefs found AI-cited content is about 25% fresher than typical search results.

Perplexity publishes its crawler, PerplexityBot, and a user-triggered fetcher, Perplexity-User. Both need to be allowed in robots.txt. Check your logs: pages PerplexityBot never requests cannot be cited.

What to do

Mostly good SEO, with a refresh routine on top.

  1. Rank for the specific questions. Comparison, pricing and how-to pages for the sub-questions your buyers ask.
  2. Refresh monthly. Real updates to your five to ten most valuable pages; log what changed.
  3. Answer first. Short, direct opening sentences Perplexity can quote.
  4. Allow PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. And keep content server-rendered.

Use it as your early-warning system

Perplexity reflects changes within days, so it is the fastest feedback loop you have. If a refreshed page appears in Perplexity citations, Google and ChatGPT usually follow; if it does not, look for a ranking or access problem first.

Share of traffic is still small: Goodie's B2B panel put Perplexity at 7.3% of measurable AI referrals in March–April 2026. Its value is in signal quality and link rate rather than volume.

What counts as a real refresh

A real update changes what the page says: new statistics, prices or dates, a new section for a question customers asked this month, replaced screenshots, removed advice that no longer applies. Changing only the date does nothing and can erode trust.

A simple calendar keeps it from becoming a project. Week one: facts and figures. Week two: this month's customer questions. Week three: screenshots and examples. Week four: re-test the prompt list and log citations. Two to three hours a month for your ten most valuable pages is enough.

Counts as a refreshDoes not count

Which pages to refresh first

Pages with backlinks but falling traffic, then commercial question pages ("best", "cost", "vs"), then your official FAQ. These already have authority and only need freshness to get back into the citation pool; new content is slower and harder.

Ahrefs' guidance is the same: refresh fading pages with real updates. Keep URLs and headings that rank, change what is out of date, and keep a change log (page, date, what changed, source) so you can connect an update in week one to a Perplexity citation in week two and a Google movement in week six.

What Perplexity rewards on the page itself

Specific, current, well-structured pages. Open each section with the answer, name the thing (product, place, price, standard), include a dated update and a source for any figure, and keep the HTML clean so the live fetch can read it quickly.

Because Perplexity shows its sources prominently, the page it lands people on should look trustworthy at a glance: a clear title, a visible author and date, and the answer near the top. Perplexity visitors have usually already seen your name in the citation list; the page just has to confirm the choice.

A quick test I run on client pages: load the page with JavaScript disabled and scroll. If the key facts are not on screen, neither Perplexity nor ChatGPT can quote them. Fix that before any content work.

Getting your team to do the refresh

Refresh work fails when it is nobody's job. Give one person ownership of the ten-page list, put the four weekly tasks in the calendar, and report results in the same monthly meeting as rankings and leads.

Keep the change log. It takes a minute per edit and it is what connects a refresh in week one to a Perplexity citation in week two and a Google movement in week six. Without it, results look like luck and the routine is dropped the first busy month.

Common mistakes: date-only updates (search engines and AI compare content, not timestamps), refreshing the newest pages instead of the ones with links and traffic, and full rewrites that lose the headings and URLs that already rank. Refresh means improve, not replace.

How Perplexity fits a multi-platform plan

Ahrefs found only 14% overlap in the top 50 cited domains across AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, with just seven domains common to all three. Perplexity is the one most aligned with Google, so it is where SEO investment shows up first; ChatGPT rewards publisher mentions; Google's surfaces reward authority, YouTube and Reddit.

You do not need separate strategies, but you do need separate tracking. The same page refresh that lifts Perplexity citations also helps Google; the publisher pitch that earns a ChatGPT mention is a different task. Give each platform its own line in the report so you can see which effort is paying off where.

Ahrefs' advice on priorities: Google's AI features and ChatGPT carry most AI search volume, so they come first; Perplexity is a fraction of the volume but gives the fastest, cleanest signal. Use it to learn and to prove, then scale to the bigger platforms.

Perplexity for Australian brands

Perplexity rewards specific, current, well-ranked pages, which favours local and niche brands that answer their own market's questions clearly. A page on "what SEO costs in Victoria" with current figures will outperform a generic national guide in Perplexity answers to Victorian buyers.

It is also the platform where you can prove AI visibility turns into leads fastest, because it links so generously. Use Perplexity referral sessions in GA4, with the form question, to show stakeholders that the AI work produces enquiries, then extend the same plan to the bigger but slower platforms.

The short version

Rank, refresh, allow the bots. Perplexity will show you whether it worked before anyone else does.
