Yes. Most AI answers are built from a live web search, and pages that rank well in Google are much more likely to be cited. What has changed is the payoff: fewer clicks on simple informational questions, more value in commercial and complex ones, and a new job of being named inside the answer.
AI searches the web too
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's own AI features all run web searches to ground their answers. If your page is not found in those searches, it cannot be cited. SEO is the foundation that AEO and GEO build on.
The overlap varies by platform. Ahrefs found about 38% of AI Overview citations and 28.6% of Perplexity citations ranked in Google's top 10, while ChatGPT overlapped only 8–10%. So strong Google rankings give you a head start on Google's AI features and Perplexity, and a smaller but real one on ChatGPT.
What has changed
Fewer clicks for simple questions, because the answer is shown directly. Pew Research found people clicked a normal result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared versus 15% without one, and SparkToro's Similarweb-based analysis put zero-click Google searches at around two-thirds in early 2026.
At the same time, Google still handles more than five trillion searches a year, and AI referral traffic is about 1% of all website visits according to Conductor. Search did not shrink; the share of it that ends in a click did. Ahrefs put the traffic difference bluntly: Google sends roughly 210 times more visits than all AI platforms combined, even though AI traffic grew 9.7 times in a year.
| Measure | Finding | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Zero-click Google searches | ~two-thirds (early 2026) | SparkToro / Datos |
| Click rate with AI summary | 8% vs 15% without | Pew Research |
| AI referrals as share of web traffic | ~1% | Conductor 2026 |
| Google vs AI referral volume | ~210× | Ahrefs |
Where SEO still pays most
Commercial and complex questions. Branded searches and queries where the user is comparing, pricing or choosing still send valuable visitors, and AI answers for those questions quote pages that rank.
Amsive's analysis, reported by Search Engine Journal, found branded queries with an AI Overview actually saw an 18% higher click-through rate, the opposite of the general trend. Ahrefs found free tools (calculators, checkers, templates) rarely trigger AI Overviews at all, which makes them a durable traffic play. And Ahrefs reported AI visitors converting at about 23 times the organic rate, so the smaller AI stream is disproportionately valuable.
What to keep doing
The fundamentals have not changed; their purpose has widened. Technical health, commercial topics and brand signals now serve Google and the AI assistants at once.
- Technical health. Fast, crawlable, server-rendered pages. ChatGPT's crawler cannot run JavaScript, and AI systems drop slow pages when fetching live.
- Commercial topics. Comparisons, pricing, "best for", local service pages. These still earn clicks and citations.
- Brand signals. Mentions, reviews and consistent descriptions across the web. Ahrefs found a 0.664 correlation between branded mentions and AI Overview visibility.
- Fresh content. Cited pages are about 25% fresher than typical results. Maintain what ranks.
What to stop doing
Stop chasing informational keywords whose answer fits in a sentence, stop measuring only rankings and clicks, and stop treating AI visibility as a separate project with a separate budget.
- Thin informational pages 99.9% of AI Overview-triggering keywords are informational (Ahrefs). If the Overview fully answers it, there is no click to win.
- Rankings as the only KPI Add AI mentions, citations and AI referral conversions to the monthly report.
- Separate SEO and AI plans Same site, same content, same mentions. One plan.
Where the traffic actually comes from
Google. Ahrefs' comparison found Google sends roughly 210 times more visits than all major AI platforms combined, and Conductor measured AI referrals at roughly 1% of all website traffic in 2026. AI traffic is growing quickly from a small base; Google is the base.
This is why I do not recommend moving budget out of SEO and into "AI optimisation" as a separate line. The same crawlable site, the same specific and current content and the same brand mentions serve both. The extra work for AI is mostly measurement and earned mentions, and both are cheaper when the SEO foundation is already strong.
How to read your own numbers
Expect impressions to rise while clicks fall on informational pages: Google shows your content inside Overviews to more people, but fewer of them click. Judge those pages by whether you are cited, not by clicks. Judge commercial pages by clicks and conversions as before.
Add three lines to the monthly report: AI mentions and citations across a fixed prompt list, AI referral sessions and conversions from a GA4 custom channel, and the share of leads who say they heard about you through an AI tool. Together they show whether SEO is still doing its job in the places where answers are now written.
A 90-day plan if you are starting now
Fix access and tracking first, then audit, then content and mentions. This order means you can measure everything that follows.
- Weeks 1–2 Unblock AI crawlers, confirm server rendering, set up the GA4 AI channel and the form question.
- Weeks 3–4 SEO baseline plus AI visibility against three to five competitors. Pick the platforms that matter for your market.
- Months 2–3 Refresh the top pages, publish cite-worthy comparisons and data, earn mentions on the sources AI already uses.
- Ongoing Monthly report: rankings, citations, share of voice, AI conversions.
What good SEO looks like now
The checklist is familiar, but the emphasis has shifted towards being quotable, current and known. Rankings are still the gateway; the extra work is making sure what the machine finds behind the gateway is worth repeating.
- Crawlable by everything. Googlebot, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot all allowed. Server-rendered content.
- Specific pages for specific questions. One clear question per page, answered in the first sentence, with named facts.
- Fresh where it counts. Top pages updated with real changes at least quarterly.
- Known beyond your domain. Reviews, lists and publications that describe you consistently.
- Measured in three places. Rankings and clicks, AI citations and mentions, AI-attributed conversions.
None of this is new to good SEO practitioners. What changed is that the audience for your content now includes the systems writing the answers, and those systems reward exactly the qualities search engines have asked for all along: clarity, specificity, authority and currency.
What this means for Australian brands specifically
Australian search behaviour follows the US pattern with a lag, and AI Overviews and AI Mode are now live here. Local-intent queries trigger AI Overviews far less often, so local SEO, Google Business Profile and location pages remain unusually valuable for Australian service businesses.
For brands selling nationally or overseas, the opposite applies: informational and comparison queries increasingly end in an AI answer, so being the cited source matters more than the click. Either way, the work starts with the same foundation: a fast, crawlable site, specific pages for the questions buyers actually ask, and a brand that is mentioned consistently on sites Australians and the AI systems already trust.
The short version for your leadership team
SEO is how you get found by the machines that write the answers. Keep investing in it, measure it differently, and add the work of being named in the answer itself.
