AI Overviews are Google's AI summaries at the top of results. They cite authoritative, established sites plus YouTube and Reddit, about 38% of citations come from Google's top 10, and when one appears the top organic result loses about 58% of its clicks. Being cited inside the Overview is now the goal for informational queries.
Why AI Overviews matter
Because they take the click. Ahrefs' Search Console analysis found the number one ranking page loses about 58% of its click-through rate when an AI Overview is present. Pew Research measured clicks on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without.
Which sources AI Overviews cite
Authoritative, established sites in health, finance and reference, plus Google-owned YouTube (about 5.6% of all AI Overview citations) and Reddit. About 38% of citations come from pages already in Google's top 10, so classic rankings give the strongest head start of any AI surface.
Ahrefs also notes the link between rankings and citations is weakening: Overviews increasingly pull from outside the top 10, including YouTube and Reddit. So ranking is the entry ticket, not the whole game.
| Signal | Finding | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Citations from Google top 10 | ~38% | Ahrefs |
| YouTube share of citations | ~5.6% | Ahrefs |
| Citations that change on refresh | >45%, refresh about every 2 days | Ahrefs |
| Overlap with AI Mode citations | 13.7% | Ahrefs, 730K responses |
Which queries trigger them
Almost entirely informational. Ahrefs found 99.9% of keywords that trigger an AI Overview are informational, around 58% of question-style queries trigger one, and local-intent searches rarely do. Free tools (calculators, templates) seldom trigger them either.
Use this when planning. If the Overview already answers a query completely, there is no click to win and the only goal is to be the cited source. For commercial and local queries, classic SEO still earns the visit.
How to be cited
Write sections that open with the answer, stand alone, name specific facts and are kept current. Length does not matter: Ahrefs found a 0.04 correlation between word count and citations. Freshness does: cited content is about 25% fresher than typical results.
- Answer first. The first sentence under each H2 should answer the heading on its own.
- Stand-alone sections. AI splits pages into chunks; each should make sense without the previous paragraph.
- Specific facts. Names, numbers, places, prices, with a source.
- Real updates. Refresh top pages quarterly with changed content, not just a new date.
- YouTube and Reddit. A clear video and a genuine answer in a relevant thread both count.
AI Overviews are spreading, and clicks are concentrating
Comscore data reported in September 2026 put AI Overviews on roughly 39% of US desktop Google searches in June 2026, up from about 26% a year earlier. Conductor's analysis of 21.9 million queries put them at about 25% of all searches, roughly double Semrush's 13.14% in March 2025. Whatever the exact figure, the direction is one way.
The click impact is not uniform. Amsive's analysis, reported by Search Engine Journal, found branded queries with an AI Overview saw an 18% higher click-through rate, the opposite of the general trend. Informational pages lose; brand and commercial pages can hold or gain. Plan page by page, not site-wide.
A pre-publish checklist for Overview-ready pages
Seven checks, most of them minutes each, that cover what the citation data says matters.
- Heading is a full question or statement Not a single word.
- First sentence answers it Read it alone; does it work?
- Section stands alone No dangling "this" or "it".
- At least one specific fact or number With a named source.
- Real update in the last 90 days And a visible updated date.
- Server-rendered HTML AI systems should not need JavaScript to read it.
- Not blocked in robots.txt Google-Extended controls Gemini grounding; normal Googlebot access governs Overviews.
AI Overviews and your other channels
Overviews draw heavily on YouTube and Reddit, so your video and community presence feed your Google visibility, not just your AI Mode visibility. A clear answer video embedded on the page it supports, and a genuine answer in the relevant Reddit thread, raise the odds the Overview cites you from more than one direction.
This is why I plan SEO, AEO and GEO together rather than as separate projects. The same crawlable page, the same specific facts and the same earned mentions serve Google's classic results, its AI surfaces and the standalone assistants. The extra work for Overviews is mostly structure and freshness on pages you already have.
How to tell an Overview is taking your clicks
In Search Console, a page whose impressions rise while clicks fall is very likely being shown inside an Overview. Note those pages, check the query in Google, and record whether you are cited. If you are, the page is doing its new job; if not, it is the first one to rewrite.
Report these pages on their own line. Judging them by clicks alone will make a cited page look like a failure, when it is the brand being named in front of more people than before. Pair the Search Console view with the monthly prompt check and, where you can, the form question.
Worked example: rewriting one section
Before: "There are many factors to consider when choosing an SEO expert, and this depends on your situation." After: "A good Melbourne SEO expert gives you a fixed-price quote, names who does the work and sends a monthly report you can read in five minutes. Ask what the fee excludes." The second version names a place, specific deliverables and an action, and it stands alone.
What changed is exactly what the citation data rewards: a vague opener became a direct answer, "this" became a named subject, and specific facts replaced an opinion. Every figure should come from a source you can show, which is also what makes the passage worth quoting.
Which pages to prioritise
Start with pages already in the top ten for questions that trigger an Overview, because about 38% of citations come from those results. Then pages with backlinks but falling traffic. Then commercial comparison and pricing pages, where a citation can still become an enquiry.
Leave broad informational pages for last, or retire them if the Overview already answers the question completely; there is no click left to win there. Free tools (calculators, checkers, templates) rarely trigger Overviews at all, which makes them one of the more durable traffic plays left in informational search.
For Australian businesses specifically, local-intent queries trigger Overviews far less often (Ahrefs puts it around 7%), so Google Business Profile, location pages and reviews keep their full value. National and international brands face the opposite: more of their informational demand ends in an Overview, so being the cited source matters more than the click.
What about schema markup?
Keep it for the features that use it (FAQ, Article, Organisation) but do not expect it to drive citations on its own. Ahrefs found no proven effect of schema on AI citations; clean headings and specific, current text matter far more.
What about opting out?
You can remove your pages as a source, but Google still generates the Overview from competitors' pages. For a brand that wants to be found, opting out rarely helps.
How to measure
Search Console does not yet separate Overview impressions, but a page whose impressions rise while clicks fall is very likely being shown inside one. Cross-check with a monthly prompt list in Google and note which domains are cited alongside you.
Remember the churn: more than 45% of citations change when Overviews refresh, roughly every two days. Judge trends over a quarter, not a single check.
