THE SHORT ANSWER

Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and that realistic estimates and clear work are the signs of a good SEO. Use that as your first filter, then compare price, scope, who does the work and how the agreement ends.

What Google says to look for

Google's guidance for businesses hiring an SEO is short and direct. Use its four tests as your first filter before you compare prices or proposals.

  1. No guarantees. Google: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
  2. Realistic estimates. Google: an SEO audit "should be about giving you realistic estimates of improvement, and an estimate of the work involved."
  3. First place promises. Google: "If they guarantee you that their changes will give you first place in search results, find someone else."
  4. Special claims. Google: be wary of SEOs who "claim to guarantee rankings, allege a 'special relationship' with Google, or advertise a 'priority submit' to Google."

What SEO costs in Melbourne

Published prices give you a baseline. Two 2026 studies of Australian providers put the lowest published monthly retainer at about $1,085 for consultants and about $1,100 for agencies. A separate audit of 50 entry offers found a median of $790 a month. Melbourne firms publish wider ranges.

Read the lowest price with care. The $790 median reflects starter packages, and a low figure rarely covers a full program. Ask whether the price includes GST, because several published prices do not say.

Who will do the work

Most of the value in SEO comes from the person doing the work, so find out who that is before you sign.

  1. Name the person. Ask who will do the work day to day, and whether you can speak with them before you sign.
  2. Ask for references. Seomelbourne advises asking for clients you can contact, and for the last three monthly reports.
  3. Ask where the work is done. Design Box says offshore delivery is sold at $10 to $50 an hour. Ask whether your work is done in-house or offshore, and by whom.
  4. Check the focus. Seomelbourne suggests asking whether a consultant takes only one client per industry, so a direct competitor is not also a client.

Scope and reporting in writing

A proposal should say what will be done, how often, and how you will know it worked.

  1. Tasks. List the audit, technical fixes, content, and link or mention work, and state what is excluded.
  2. Reporting. Ask what the monthly report contains. Design Box says its monthly reporting includes client and competitor analysis, so ask for a sample.
  3. Outcomes, not only rankings. Seomelbourne advises checking that the consultant reports on leads and revenue, not just rankings.
  4. Keep your accounts. Make sure the business owns its Google Search Console and Google Analytics access, so the data stays with you if you change provider.

Set realistic timelines

Two Melbourne firms give similar timelines. Design Box says initial movement usually takes 3 to 6 months, and substantial results in competitive markets take 6 to 12 months. Seomelbourne gives the same ranges for measurable improvement. Treat these as estimates, not promises, and note that Design Box calls page one within 30 days unrealistic.

Quick fixes such as title tags and technical problems can show results within weeks, according to Seomelbourne. A good provider will say which work is quick and which takes longer.

Consultant, agency or freelancer

The right model depends on whether you already have people to carry out the plan.

  1. Consultant. Suits a business with in-house marketing or development staff who can carry out the plan.
  2. Agency. Suits a business with no in-house capacity to do the work.
  3. Freelancer. Can suit a small budget or one-off tasks. Check their cover for holidays and busy periods.

Red flags to walk away from

Any one of these is a reason to ask more questions. Several together is a reason to walk away.

  1. Guaranteed rankings. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
  2. Cold emails. Google: "Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that email you out of the blue."
  3. Secrecy. Google: be careful if a company "is secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do."
  4. Link schemes. Google: avoid SEOs that "talk about link popularity schemes or submitting your site to thousands of search engines."
  5. Link quotas. Design Box gives an example of a red flag: a package promising 20 links a month.

Questions to ask before you sign

Ask these in writing, so you can compare answers from different providers.

  1. What would you change first? Which problems on my site would you fix first, and why?
  2. How will you measure progress? What will the monthly report show, and how often will we review it?
  3. Who does the work? Who will do it day to day, and can I speak with them?
  4. What is included? What is in the monthly price, what costs extra, and is GST included?
  5. How does it end? How long is the agreement, and how can either side end it?

The short version

Use Google's tests first: no guarantees, realistic estimates, and no special claims. Then compare the price with the published range, confirm who does the work, get the scope and reporting in writing, and check how the agreement ends. A provider who passes all of that is a real option. If you want a second opinion on your current SEO, use the contact page to request a free AI visibility audit.
